Campaign Visual Direction
Overview
A full campaign visual system developed for a theatre production by Nine Years Theatre, commissioned by Esplanade for the Huayi Chinese Festival of Arts.
The project covered creative direction, art direction, design, and photography, alongside the development of a staged visual narrative across campaign phases.
The Challenge
To create a visually cohesive campaign that reflects an emotionally layered narrative centred on grief, relationships, and personal transformation.
The campaign needed to evolve across phases while maintaining a clear and recognisable visual identity.
Approach
The campaign was structured in progressive phases to build narrative depth and audience engagement:
- Teaser Phase
A single white chrysanthemum in full bloom, introducing the central theme of loss and setting the tone for the campaign - Key Visual — Phase 1
Three sisters positioned in close proximity, symbolising intimacy and mutual support, with the chrysanthemum carried forward as a visual anchor - Key Visual — Phase 2
A full ensemble image featuring all 11 cast members, expanding the narrative into a broader emotional landscape
This phased approach allowed the campaign to transition from a singular, symbolic moment into a more complex and collective story.
Concept
The visual language draws from themes of grief, transformation, and human connection.
The white chrysanthemum, traditionally associated with mourning, is used as a central motif. Beyond grief, it also represents innocence, honesty, and loyalty, reflecting the emotional depth of the characters.
As the campaign progresses, the introduction of pink and warm-toned flowers signals a shift from loss to warmth. Each flower is selected based on floriography, aligning with individual character traits and narrative arcs.
This transition creates a visual system that mirrors the journey from grief to acceptance.
Execution
The project was executed with full creative oversight across all visual elements:
- Creative direction and campaign strategy
- Art direction and visual system development
- Photography and image production
- Design adaptation across campaign formats
The visuals were deployed across festival platforms, social media, and promotional materials as part of a high-visibility arts programme.
Outcome
The campaign achieved strong visibility and audience engagement:
- High-profile exposure as part of a major arts festival
- Strong ticket sales, with most shows sold out
- A cohesive visual identity that supported the emotional narrative of the production
